Community
Conversations
On Monday, March 2, Council staff completed the 14th and final
Community Conversation to review the Council’s draft Report,
commonly being referred to as The Our Waters, Our Communities
Report by many event participants. Productive and lively conversations
were held in Fredonia, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Oswego, Geneva,
Watertown, Albany, Hempstead, Montauk, Greenport, Stony Brook, Millbrook,
and New York City.
In spite of the recognized short lead time for coordination and
promotion, the Community Conversations drew over 500 individuals
and organizational representatives. The format of the events was
uniformly acknowledged as a productive opportunity for participants
to discuss their perspectives and issues about the draft.
The events’ success was due in large part to the generosity
and hospitality of over 25 co-sponsoring
organizations. These co-sponsors
supported the events by securing free space, promoting the events,
and providing refreshments. This effective and efficient co-sponsorship
approach provid es a template for future collaborations.
Council staff is currently in the process of coding and analyzing
the participant response sheets, notes from the Community Conversation
breakouts, and mailed and electronically submitted comments. In general,
responses to the draft Report were positive and supportive, with
concerns focusing on action and funding for implementation. The events
opened the door to future place-based conversations with stakeholders
across New York.
